Supporters give to, through, and with the Boston Foundation by establishing donor advised funds with us, and/or by giving to:
Others make commitments for planned legacy giving or, as professional advisors, serve as liaisons between donors and the Foundation. Thank you for being part of and sustaining our communities.
Donor Advised Funds
The Boston Foundation supports the philanthropy of hundreds of individuals, families and businesses through Donor Advised Funds. These funds are established by active philanthropists, many of whom give to some of the same organizations and causes supported by our endowment. Others give to nonprofits in other parts of the country or around the world. Donors often choose to establish donor advised funds as an alternative to opening a private foundation in order to avoid the administrative, legal, tax, or regulatory burdens.
The Annual Fund for Civic Leadership
We believe that civic leadership and civic engagement are the most powerful ways to advance economic justice and equity in Greater Boston. We serve as a hub of partnerships and networks that work with—and answer to—the communities we serve. Through our civic leadership we are resolved to power progress, improve lives, and strengthen communities. The following individuals, families, and institutions contributed to this year’s effort to support the Boston Foundation’s civic leadership.

Supporting Donor-Driven Philanthropy
The Professional Advisors Committee counsels TBF as we develop and maintain strong working relationships with Greater Boston’s advisor community, and it provides its members with opportunities to learn about issues in philanthropy, exchange ideas, and build relationships with other advisors. The Professional Advisors Network comprises professional advisors with approximately 10 years of experience, connecting them with others at a similar career stage to explore the role philanthropy can play in an advisor’s practice and to learn more about the Greater Boston community.

Targeted TBF Initiatives
Many members of our donor community—be they DAF holders, legacy society members, or occasional contributors—support the Foundation’s special programs and initiatives, with donations totaling $6–10 million per year. These include such efforts as Meeting the Moment: Sustaining Families, the Racial Wealth Gap Partnership down payment assistance program, and the Business Equity Fund, to name a few. Other resources are directed into designated funds, scholarships, and other community-serving channels.
Designated Funds
These important funds provide annual support to specific nonprofit organizations, such as the Watertown Boys & Girls Club and the John F. Kennedy Library. Many of them were established to pay tribute to a former director or major donor. Others honor a relative or friend who was especially dedicated to—or helped by—a particular institution.
Additional Funds
The Boston Foundation also has Scholarship Funds to increase access to education for diverse outstanding students, and Supporting Organizations that maintain their public charity status while their founders remain involved in decisions about grants.
